Non-store Retailing Business

Retailers are more than just businesses operating tangible shops at the city-centre or on the street corner. This is because products can also be sold without a store. Non-store retailers market their merchandise through television, electronic shopping, print or electronic catalogues, door-to-door solicitation, house demonstration, and mail order. Even portable stalls and vending machines can be called non-store retailers because they lack some of the basic elements of a store retailer such as mainstay sales personnel or a fixed location.

Non-store retailing eliminates the need to buy, store, and protect a large inventory since these tasks are handled by others. Retailers merely have to procure merchandise upon receipt of valid orders. Non-store retailers are in fact middlemen servicing end-customers and actual suppliers. There are no costs incurred related to maintaining a store. Generally, operation costs cover only promotion, delivery, and insurance for handling damages.
