Prior to the development and eventual widespread use of money, bartering was one of the common methods of exchanging goods between persons. For example, a person who wanted a pair of shoes would have to give the shoemaker an item that the latter wanted before he could get the footwear he desired.

Though this system of commerce certainly had its advantages, its one glaring disadvantage was the fact that the goods exchanged were sometimes not of the same or equal value.
